Gemstone price per carat calculator

Gemstones are quoted per carat but sold by the stone. Enter the weight and the price per carat, or the total, and see the other, with an optional markup.

This does arithmetic only. It does not look up market prices, and the figures are in whatever currency you enter.

Price per carat times weight

Total price is the price per carat multiplied by the weight in carats. A 2.5 ct stone at 400 per carat costs 1,000.

Per-carat prices rise with size

Larger fine stones are rarer, so the price per carat usually goes up with size. Do not apply one per-carat figure to stones of very different sizes.

Markup is not margin

A 25% markup on cost gives a 20% margin on the selling price. Use the margin calculator to see both.

How to use it

  • Enter the weight in carats.
  • Enter the price per carat, or the total price.
  • Optionally add a markup percentage.
  • Read the total, per-carat and selling prices.

Frequently asked questions

Does this tell me what a stone is worth?

No. It does arithmetic only. Value depends on type, colour, clarity, cut, size, origin and treatment.

How do I keep price history for each stone?

Store cost, asking price and sale price on the stone record. GemColony keeps this history for you.
