Cost follows weight
The simplest fair way to split a parcel's cost is by weight. A 2 ct stone carries twice the cost of a 1 ct stone.
When to split differently
If the stones differ a lot in quality, you may weight cost by estimated value instead. Use this as the starting point.
Why it matters
Without a cost per stone you cannot see which sales made money. GemColony splits parcels into stones and keeps the cost with each.
How to use it
- Enter the parcel's total cost.
- Paste the weight of each stone in carats, separated by commas, spaces or new lines.
- Read the cost per stone and the average cost per carat.
Frequently asked questions
How do I split the cost of a parcel of gemstones?
Divide the total cost by the total weight to get the cost per carat, then multiply by each stone's weight.
Does GemColony do this automatically?
Yes. Split a parcel or lot into single stones and the cost is carried across.
