What yield means
Yield is finished weight divided by rough weight, shown as a percentage. A yield of 30% means 70% of the rough was lost in cutting.
Cost per finished carat
Add the rough cost and the cutting cost and divide by the finished weight. This is the figure to compare with your selling price.
Yields vary widely
Yield depends on the shape of the rough, the stone and the design. Compare like with like, such as the same stone type and cut.
How to use it
- Enter the rough weight in carats.
- Enter the finished weight in carats.
- Optionally add the rough cost and the cutting cost.
- Read the yield, weight lost and cost per finished carat.
Frequently asked questions
What is a good cutting yield?
It depends on the stone and the rough. There is no single good figure, so track your own yields by stone type and cut and compare over time.
How do I track yield for every stone?
Record weight at each stage. GemColony's lapidary workflow does this and shows yield per stone and per cutter.
