Lab report vs provenance certificate: what each proves
· GemColony
A lab report is an opinion on the stone
A report from a gemological laboratory states what the stone is, whether it is natural, synthetic or treated, and sometimes its origin. It is an independent examination of the stone as it is today.
A provenance certificate is a record of the journey
A provenance certificate documents where a stone was bought, who cut it, what was done to it and who has held it. It is issued by the seller, so its value depends on the seller's reputation and on how well it can be checked.
Which does a buyer need?
For high-value stones, buyers usually expect a laboratory report. For stones sold on their story, such as ethically sourced or directly purchased from a mine, a provenance certificate adds trust. Many sales use both.
Keeping them together
Link the report number to the certificate on the same stone record so a buyer sees one consistent history.
