How to issue a gemstone provenance certificate
· GemColony
What provenance means
Provenance is the documented history of a stone: where it was mined or bought, who cut it, what treatments it has had and who has owned it. Buyers increasingly ask for it, especially for natural, untreated and ethically sourced stones.
Not a laboratory report
A laboratory report is an independent opinion on the stone's identity and treatment. A provenance certificate is a dealer's record of the stone's journey. They work together: the report supports the claim, the certificate tells the story.
What to include
Stone details, the source and date of purchase, cutting and treatment history, any lab report numbers, the issuing business and a unique certificate number. Add photos.
Letting buyers verify
A certificate is more convincing if a buyer can check it. GemColony's provenance certificates carry an online verification link, so a buyer can confirm the certificate is genuine and unchanged.
