AI gemstone identification: what it can and cannot do

· GemColony

What AI can do well

Given clear photographs, AI can suggest a stone's type, estimate clarity, notice likely treatments or phenomena such as stars and cat's eyes, and flag stones that deserve a closer look. For a dealer sorting a large parcel, that saves time.

What it cannot do

A photograph cannot show everything. Many treatments and origins can only be confirmed with laboratory equipment, so AI output is a lead to check, not proof. Synthetic stones can be convincing, and lighting changes how a stone looks.

Using it responsibly

Use AI results to sort and to decide which stones to send to a laboratory. Do not print AI suggestions on an invoice as facts about origin or treatment.

Pricing suggestions

Automated price suggestions are a starting point based on market data. A dealer still has to judge the individual stone, current demand and relationship with the buyer.
