How to value loose gemstones
· GemColony
Start with identification
Confirm what the stone is and whether it is natural, synthetic or treated. When value is high, get a laboratory report.
Grade the stone
Describe colour, clarity, cut and size in consistent terms. Photograph the stone under the same light each time so that buyers and staff see the same thing.
Compare with real sales
Asking prices are wishes. Your own recent sales and memo outcomes for similar stones are better evidence. Note the stones that sold quickly and the ones that sat.
Add costs and margin
Include purchase price, cutting, treatment, lab fees and shipping, then your margin. A system that keeps all costs on the stone record makes this a lookup instead of a calculation.
