Why general ERP software struggles with gemstones

· GemColony

Products by quantity versus stones one by one

General ERP systems assume you stock a product, count units and sell them. A gemstone is a unique item. Two stones of the same type and weight can differ in price by a large margin because of colour, clarity, cut, origin and treatment.

Parcels and lots

Dealers buy rough or cut stones in lots, then split them into parcels and single stones. Cost has to follow the split. Generic inventory tools handle this poorly unless customised.

Memos and consignment

Handing stones to another party without selling them is routine in the trade. General systems may support consignment for ordinary goods, but not with a record for each stone and a clear return or sale step.

Cutting and certificates

Weight loss through cutting stages and the issuing of provenance certificates are specialist needs. They can be built into a general ERP with development work, which is why some dealers choose a gem-specific system instead.

When a general ERP is the right choice

If gems are one small part of a large manufacturing or retail business, or you already have developers extending a general ERP, it can make sense. Otherwise a gem-specific tool is usually faster to start.
